The
Melanesian culture of New Ireland is still very intact and takes place on
special occasions according to the traditional requirements. Locally it
is called Malagan as it embodies the traditions and beliefs of centuries past.
The colorful Malagan carvings, masks and singsings belong to the myths and
events of a time before.... 'Tumbuna'.
Shell money
is used through PNG in various forms. Here in New Ireland the shell money is
measured as a fathom and uses small chips of a special bright reddy-orange shell
which are drilled, placed on a string and then
polished with stone to make a
fine necklace.
There is a traditional shell
money-maker working daily in Balus
Village located next to the TreeHouse. Shell money is used as a traditional
payment for a bride, land or to settle a dispute.
The Treehouse can arrange for a traditional mumu or cultural performance on request.
