The TreeHouse has now completed one year of upgrades and rebuilding at the TreeHouse property. There has been no marketing or promotion during this time some of our intended guests may be forgiven if they thought we had shut down. But no... we have continued to accept guests during this past year and they have been enjoying the upgrades. The owner has now taken over the management of the resort to ensure the quality and standard of service is maintained.
The TreeHouse is located on a beach at sea level. There is no passing water supply and we have only recently received power from Kavieng. Designing a reliable water supply to provide for the eight building was quite a challenge. Luckily there is a freshwater spring that feeds the mangroves and we have been able to source from that. The eco toilets have been replaced with regular flushing toilets and the hot showers work great.
There is a new Reception/Office building under construction and it will have two air-conditioned luxury units on the second floor.
TreeHouse Diving offers a world class experience. Our diving area covers schooling palegis, channel drift dives, coral reefs and ocean walls, ocean bommies, soft corals, WWII aircraft, vessels and a submarine, We are located just 2.5 degrees South of the equator and our tropical climate provides for all year diving.
Here we were swimming with dolphins near Raul Island, all of us enjoying the pristine water of our northern dive sites....
The northern hemisphere storm swells roll in season from November through to April. There are many great beach access sites along the coastal highway..... and even a small break right in front of the Treehouse. There are also a number of islands and channels near Kavieng that provide a formidable selection of surfing sites like this one at Edmagau Island

Air Niugini Jets into Kavieng
We have jet flights connecting to and from Port Moresby daily.
Rainforest Day Trek
The TreeHouse ownsPoton Mountain rainforest area and down to the West Coast .... over 2000 hectares that has been purposely retained by the TreeHouse in its original state. It includes the impressive rainforest of the west coast Kaut area about 35 minutes drive directly across the island from the TreeHouse. It is only accessible by a fine weather 4WD track or banana boat. It is the starting point of many interesting nature walks.
Geographic & Weather Information
We are located only 2.4 degrees South of the equator so our weather is always mild with balmy 28 degree days and cooler evenings. The sea temperature averages 26 degrees year round. The North West - Kavieng - THV end of New Ireland is flat and generally enjoys low humidity with plentiful breezes. From April to November it is the South East trade wind season with predictable sunny days and the occasional afternoon shower. December to May is the NW season with mostly days of calms, or occasionally, squally with breezes of up to 25 knots.
Air Niugini (PX) operate a number of international flights that depart from Tokyo (Narita), Singapore, Manila, Fiji, Sydney, Brisbane & Cairns. These aircraft connect with the PX internal F28 jets via Port Moresby to Kavieng (120 minutes direct). Qantas (QF) also service Port Moresby from Sydney & Brisbane, Some flights out of Cairns will connect same day to Kavieng. All other flights have to overnight in Port Moresby (POM). Most internal PX flights from POM to Kavieng will make one or two stops on the way. Click here to see the current PX POM - KAV - POM flight schedules
For travelers with more time there are weekly passenger vessels which connects with Rabaul, Kimbe & Lae.

New Ireland Tourist Bureau, or the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority
PNG is a vast country with many ethnic groups and lifestyles. It is a country with so much to offer in scenery, wilderness, culture, adventure, lifestyle and hospitality. On occasions the international Embassies issue Travel Alerts. These are to warn intending travelers of a problem in a particular area or an incident. This is procedure whilst necessary at the time relates to a very small group or community. Unfortunately it reflects poorly on the vast remaining regions of PNG where the communities live the normal, peaceful, Melanesian lifestyle. New Ireland is one of these quite but interesting places. Kavieng is often referred to a sleepy Somerset Maughn Town.
All air travelers currently have to connect through the Port Moresby - Jackson's Airport. You can plan to connect the same day to Kavieng orwhen over-nighting there are many fine hotels near the airport like the Airways Hotel or Gateway Hotel who provide a very high standard of safe, secure accommodation and free transfers.
The other popular areas for travelers to visit in PNG are some parts of the highlands, the north coast of the mainland, Milne Bay area and the Islands Region to the north including.... the Bismark Archipelago where New Ireland and Kavieng are located.
Yup..... the big question... there is malaria in the lowlands of PNG. I get it from time to time. You can take a propylaxis (preventative dose usually weekly) or consult your local doctor for the best medication to suit you. We suggest that you do take a preventative prior to your departure and complete the course up to two weeks after your return home depending on your type of medication and Doctors instructions. In PNG we currently use the Chinese Herbal treatment - Artisinate. But there is Maloprim, Larium, Doxycyclin, Chloroquin etc.
Digicell mobile phone service (675 - 726 44433) is available at the TreeHouse and you can use our Kavieng office for Fax / Phone / Email services.
